How to use Malwarebytes

Malwarebytes is my favorite tool to clean up malware and spyware. As a tech, I get many calls for slow computer. Each time I must use Malwarebytes to do a quick scan, and most of the time it could find some malicious files.

There are many other Anti-malware programs on the market, but Malwarebytes is the top choices for all techs. The free version of Malwarebytes has no protection, but it could scan and remove malicious files. You can pay a small fee to get the Pro version but the free version has all the functions and there is no limitation.

Download Malwarebytes:

Installing Malwarebytes:

Double click the installer and follow the onscreen instructions. Don’t worry about that it will conflict with your existing antivirus program that you have installed. The free version of Malwarebytes does not have any background protection process running in the background.

Using Malwarebyes:

The main menu of Malwarebytes is intuitive, you will see many tabs on the top. But you only care more on the Update tab. Each time before you do a scanning, click on the Update tab and check for latest updates. It not only downloads the version updates but also download the up-to-date virus definition from the server.

Scanner tab:

There are three options on this tab, the first option is Quick Scan. Which takes about 15 minutes if your computer is not too slow. It will scan the memory objects, registries, and system files plus user profile folders.

On the other hand, the full scan takes longer, about 2 hours to finish. You don’t need to do a full scan every week, but it’s recommended to do a full scan monthly. You can run the scan while you are working something else, it will not slow down your computer too much.

Removing infected files:

Once the scan is finished, it will list the files that it detects and with a checkmark on the box on each entry by default. All you need to do is to click the button to send the action to clean it. And then it will opens up a report on notepad file.

Error Troubleshooting:

Since your computer is infected badly, some smart virus know that Malwarebytes application can remove them, therefore, they could block Malwarebytes from installing or running. One solution is to download a randomized exe file and save it to this path:

C:\program files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\

Download the random mbam exe file:

Another method is to download this tool to stop the virus processes for the moment so you can run Malwarebytes.

Download Rkill.com:

This tool will stop the active virus processes. Once you downloaded it and still couldn’t run it, you can try to rename it to any application name such as iexplore.exe or Rkill.exe.
