No network connection after upgrading to Service Pack3

ISSUE

After you install Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3), Device Manager may not show any devices, and Network Connections may not show any network connections.

CAUSE

This problem may occur when an antivirus application is still running during the installation of Windows XP SP3. It also could be that the installation was corrupted in the middle of upgrading.

SOLUTION

Download the hotfix from Microsoft and install it.

If the hotfix does not fix your problem, try one of the follow tricks:

1. Uninstall Internet Explorer 7 and SP3, reboot your machine, reinstall Internet Explorer 7 and then reinstall SP3.

2. Uninstall the Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 7 for Windows (KB961260).

3. Reset the TCP/IP:

  • Click Start button, go to Run,
  • Type: cmd and click OK.
  • type:  netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt

4. If you are using a laptop for wireless, try to restart the Wireless Zero Configuration service. And if you are using other vendor network adapter, then try to reset the DHCP.

To restart a service on Windows XP:

  • Click Start button, go to Run.
  • Type "services.msc" in the field.

Find DHCP Client in the window that opens after you enter services.msc on in Run. And the Wireless Zero Configuration service is at the very bottom.
